Early March kayak trip up Whiskey George Creek, with the dense creek  canopy just starting to leaf out.  This creek meanders from Apalachicola Bay miles into the Apalachicola National Forest (in this area, referred to as "Tate's Hell"). &n

Probably got too close to this gator.  It had just crossed the road to a pond, with its 8-10 ft stretched from the road's shoulder to the water's edge.  SMWR.
My lucky day, 2/26/17, to come upon this Great Horned Owl, in the state park on St. George Island.  I was actually looking to see if any migratory warblers had yet shown up (not the case).  Up in a nearby pine tree was a very large dark sh

Unusual pose for an alligator......contented expression, and engorged neck suggest this gator had recently eaten.  Numerous glossy ibis in the area.  SMWR, 2/25.

In the foreground are several terns in their winter, non-breeding, plumage.  The largest tern, on the left side of the picture, is a Caspian Tern, our largest tern.  Note its size compared the the surrounding Royal Terns.  Also, the C

Even in the pale winter light of a February afternoon, western Colorado scenery is pretty cool.
 Telluride vanishing sunset
Mt. Wilson, over 14K ft.  San Juan Mt., southwest Colorado. Taken with my iPhone, since I was on a ski run at 12,000 ft.  My regular camera (Nikon D700) with a zoom lens is too bulky to carry under my ski jacket.  Edited this a bit,
Ski buddies, Maggie and David Wender, from Jackson, Ms.  They are splendid company, and friends for decades.  Dave (Dartmouth '73) is easily the best skier in Mississippi.  It's always nice to be on the slopes with a superior skier...
View from top of Telluride, at 12k ft.  Looking west, with Utah mountains in the distance.  Again, iPhone photo.
Cliff dwelling in Mesa Verde NP.  Fascinating place that documents the evolution of dwellings and culture of the Anasazi peoples--now more sensitively referred to as the "Ancestral Pueblos"-- who inhabited these arid mesas from 600 AD to a

Example of a deep canyon of sandstone, in which the cliff dwellings were constructed.  I hiked a short way off the authorized trail to get this cliff-edge photo---all the while Dee calling out at me to not  fall to my death, and to behave

I'm always on the lookout for an interesting train picture.  An unexpected treat here, to find a vintage narrow  gauge  boxcar of the "fallen flag" railroad, Denver & Rio Grande & Western RR (absorbed into the Union Pacific RR
Winter windmill scene, most unexpected, in the middle of the Rockies.  This nice surprise was along the banks of the Arkansas River, near Buena Vista, Co.  Although a little smaller that most traditional ranch windmills, this one is obviou
